Remember Confederate currency? It was all
paper! There was no coinage to speak of. This is in spite of the fact
that the Confederacy had two mints: one in New Orleans and another in
Dahlonega, Georgia. The problem was that no one had any precious metal
bullion. This coin, the Confederate Silver Dollar, is an attempt
to give the South something it has long been missing; its own silver
dollar.
The coin itself was designed by a great-grandnephew of John
Singleton Mosby, the legendary “Grey Ghost.” Mosby, a Major in the
Confederate Army, was the archetypical guerilla leader and fighter.
The reverse of the coin is the
authentic “Great Seal of The Confederacy.” The colonial horseman is
George Washington. Remember, Washington was a Virginian, a Southern
gentleman and hero, not only of the USA, but especially the CSA. The
wreath surrounding Washington is there to remind us of the South’s
agrarian nature, its roots and lifestyle. The wreath consists of the
South’s six main staples: corn, wheat, tobacco, sugar cane, rice, and, you
guessed it… cotton. “DEO VINDICE,” the motto of the Confederacy, is Latin
for “God will vindicate.” 22 February 1862 is not only George
Washington’s birthday, it is the date the Confederate Constitution was
adopted.
The centerpiece on the obverse of the coin is an eagle from a
US 1830s silver half-dollar. The breastplate or shield has the “Stars and
Bars” of the battle flag, with “CSA” above. The thirteen stars stand for
the eleven Confederate States, plus Kentucky and Missouri, two Border
States whose sympathies lay largely with the South. The scripture,
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,” is from Psalm 33, Verse 12,
and celebrates the strong Christian faith and tradition of the old South.
It is also evident in the modern South. The coin’s date is under the
eagle. “anno Domini” above the date simply means “in the year of our
Lord.” This coin is one of a kind, and it is certain to be appreciated
when you give it.
