Geography

Heat

After introducing heat, students will learn about the sources of heat, how heat moves and how to measure heat.  Students will participate in several experiments and demonstrations while learning about heat.  After learning all about heat, students will create a solar hotdog cooker by following directions.  Students will explain orally how the solar hotdog cooker works.

Map Skills

In this unit of study, students will learn how to use maps in everyday life.  To peak students interest in learning about maps, students will enjoy making an edible map to launch the unit of study.  A few key concepts that students will learn include learning how to use a map scale to determine distance, how to use a map key, and how to use an inset map.  At the end of the unit, students will use the skills that they have learned to design a map of their own.

My Community

This unit focuses on Wayne County’s location, history, and government.  As a launch to the unit students will take a walking tour of historical and governmental parts of their town (Jesup, Odum, or Screven).  As a culminating activity students will create a brochure of their community using information they have learned during the unit.  Powerpoints and Promethean Board flipcharts have been developed to be used with this unit.  This unit will take about two weeks to complete.

Prefixes and Suffixes

In this unit, students will identify prefixes and suffixes, tell where they are in relation to the root or base word (beginning or end of the word), and tell how each changes the meaning of a root or base word.  Students will also tell why it is important for a good reader to know about prefixes and suffixes and their importance to written and spoken language.

Sentence Unit

After introducing students to sentences, students will learn about the four types of sentences, simple sentences, and compound sentences. For the culminating activity, students working in pairs will write a biography of their partner using all that they have learned about sentences.  A rubric will be used to score the written biographies.
